Project Overview:
In&Between focusses on the three phases of liminality: pre-liminal, liminal and post-liminal, specifically the role colour plays in these phases. This project explores how colour moves and integrates in regard to colour psychology, data, spaces, shifts, combinations and also sonic elements. The recurring loop animation enhances the feeling of being stuck in a space infinitely.
Explore each of the three phases below
PRE-LIMINAL
The first of the three phases presents itself as the pre-liminal phase. The colour scheme is a muted monochromatic yellow that is heavily inspired by the re-popularised concept of ‘the backrooms’. The deeper tones of yellow heading towards black emphasises the illusion of a 3d space.
The audio of the visual piece has been coupled with a chillwave track as chillwave is associated with the nostalgic genre continuum.
LIMINAL
The second phase shifts itself to an analogous colour scheme composed of greens, blues and retaining slight yellow tones from the previous pre-liminal phase. The square shape also echoes itself in a nostalgic attempt.
This piece has been coupled with a synthwave track driving one away from reality from the previous piece (with the chillwave and more reality-driven track).
POST-LIMINAL
The final phase is the most distant and most different from the two preceding phases. Again, we shift further from the original yellow monochromatic palette to a more night-toned palette consisting shades of blue and purple. Again the shapes echo themselves through an inviting path-like structure this time also.
This piece has been coupled with a vaporwave track. Complimenting the purple and blue tones often associated with the vaporwave aesthetic. The vaporwave genre is also the most different to that of the chillwave and synthwave genres.
The narrative elements of this project exist in an emergent manner. Through travelling through endless loops in different colour spaces mindlessly, I wanted to evaluate what sort of emotions and perhaps any memories that are able to freely conjure up.
The colour yellow also acts as a key storyteller in a subtle way, emerging from a monochromatic yellow palette in the pre-liminal phase to an analogous and more cool-toned colour palette in the liminal phase before little remnants of yellow exist in the post-liminal phase. The colour yellow helps to maintain nostalgia quite physically in these multichannel pieces and creates a sense of a loss of self at the same time.
